There is no concept for ‘normal’ for most ACoA individuals. Not how a healthy family functions, not how a healthy relationship unfolds, not for what acceptable emotions and behaviors may be for any type of situation that for non-ACoA people would be obvious. This creates challenges when an ACoA person desires to move on in life and embrace change because they have no foundation on how they should be thinking, feeling or acting as they take their steps in growth.

People who have grown-up in an alcoholic home learned at a very early age that the only consistency they had was the fact that life was completely inconsistent. We became survivalists in this arena. It was always expected that the alcoholic parent would drink, we just never knew when or where it would start or what the outcome would be; would they simply pass out until the week-end was over or would the police be called to the house…..again.

When I was growing-up in the 60’s and 70’s there was still a lot of stigma and negativity towards alcoholism. My dad being an alcoholic was the biggest secret all the neighbors knew. I just didn’t know they knew, so was always walking on egg shells trying to cover the tracks. My stomach was tied in knots and I was always scared someone would see or hear my dad when he was drunk.

I only had one friend I’d invite into the house who I felt comfortable with if she knew he drank. When she moved to Europe it was three years before I invited anyone else in again. This is not ‘normal’ but for me it was my only option.

If you’ve grown-up in an alcoholic home you know how good you became at lying. It’s not like we set out with lying as our intention, but it became much easier than telling the truth. How did I get the black eye? Oh, I tripped and hit the doorknob in my bedroom. I soon had the reputation of being a klutz. Making up stories like that is not normal but again, at the time, it was my only option.

I was clueless how I was supposed to think and feel in various situations. To hide my insecurities I became the class clown. If I made people laugh I’d feel comfortable and when I got in trouble for it, at least it was because of something I did and not because of what was happening in my home. Of this one aspect of my life I had control.

It took a lot of years of inner work with myself before I was confident in expressing my feelings. I remember one night sitting in a meditation class; we had our eyes closed and our teacher was asking us questions about something and he said “raise your hand if you think this….. raise your hand if you think that…..” I would peek and see how people were answering and raise my hand accordingly. Then I got busted because he said “Debi, it can’t be both ways, which is it for you, A or B?” I was paralyzed in that moment. I was filled with fear of saying the wrong answer and fear that I’d be in trouble for it, when the reality of the situation was we were only being asked for our perspective. Again, not normal!

Hypnosis is an incredible tool to help individuals rise above their ACoA traits. Why? Because all those patterns of behavior and emotions are stored in the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is like a computer; it will continue acting on the same program until the program is changed. This is why an adult child of an alcoholic has difficulty in learning what ‘normal’ feelings and behaviors are, because their subconscious mind is filled with the old patterns and pain from the past.

I have been working with many ACoA individuals in my hypnosis practice, helping them create a ‘new normal.’ We work on releasing the old negativity and patterns of thoughts and behavior that has been controlling them for so long. It’s like preparing a canvas to paint a picture. Once the subconscious mind has been cleansed, they start focusing in on the type of person they yearn to become, which is setting the foundation for their new normal. This takes time because getting in touch with new positive emotions with the permission to feel and express them is a whole new way of living life. But the journey is empowering and worth every step.

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind we go into every day. Reading a good book, driving down the highway and missing your exit because you were deep in thought, even studying for a test are all examples of being in hypnosis. However, many people still don’t understand the true power and positive aspects of using hypnosis in their lives.

When you are in hypnosis you are not sleeping, like when you go to bed at night. It’s considered a ‘trance-like’ sleep because your body and mind are so relaxed, yet you are still very much aware of everything going on around you. You can talk while in hypnosis.

You hear sounds when you are in hypnosis. You won’t give away any secrets or say things you don’t want to say while in hypnosis. Most importantly, you won’t do anything you don’t want to do or go against your personal code of morals and ethics, just because you are in hypnosis. You can be Catholic, Protestant, Muslim or Jewish and go into hypnosis without compromising your personal religious or cultural beliefs.

Hypnosis is not a magic pill for instant enlightenment. Hypnosis will reveal to you why you are the way you are, and how you can be when you decide to shift your perspective to create life changes.

To have change take place easily and permanently you need to be in hypnosis because that is when you are in your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is the storehouse of memory of all your life experiences, whether you consciously remember them or not. Your subconscious mind is also where habits and patterns are stored. Once you access your subconscious mind you have tapped into your inner power where anything is possible! Napoleon Hill says, in his book Think and Grow Rich “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”  How true!

I have worked with thousands of people in hypnosis for a variety of issues. I’ve done regression work and parts therapy, emotional releasement, weight loss and smoking cessation. With all these modalities the most powerful part of the sessions was the direct suggestions to create change. Why? Because the individual is accessing their inner mind to see, while imagining and believing, they have already become the person they yearn to be. They feel what it’s like to be a non-smoker, to be 100 lbs. lighter, to have the job of their dreams. They are re-framing their mind to think in the positive. They are changing their perspective about themselves and the world around them.

I had a client who was moving to a different state. She was nervous because she didn’t know where she’d be living. She was losing sleep over this issue. While in hypnosis I helped her change her perspective on this situation. I suggested that somewhere in the town she was moving to was a home, waiting for her to find it. She would be attracted to this home like it was a magnet drawing her to it. Instantly she smiled and said, “Wow, I never thought to look at it like that before.” She changed her outlook. The situation remained the same, she still needed to find a place to live, but she was seeing the situation in a positive light. When she moved she emailed me and said she found her house in less than a week.

When you change your perspective of your world you truly can change your life. You have the power and potential to be the best individual you yearn to be. Hypnosis is a wonderful, safe and effective tool to help you create those changes.

As a minister and practitioner of spiritual prosperity principles I believe deeply that to maintain flow in life we must keep the doors open to give. Whenever my husband and I experience financial challenges we go into ‘giving’ mode looking to see where we can give to someone or someplace, either our time, energy or money. The purpose is twofold. One, we don’t want to get stuck in a mentality of lack and limitation. Two, we know that the spiritual prosperity formulas work; when you give you are opening yourself up to receive more from God.

Ah, so giving is actually a selfish motive to receive, you might be saying. No, I am not saying that at all. Let me share some examples.

A couple of years ago I experienced a significant and unexpected financial set back. After my personality stopped freaking out my husband and I went to the bible and read passages on giving. We knew that the only way to climb out of this hole was to bless the situation and to give more. So we did. We increased our tithe to our church at the time, we gave free will donations and I started volunteering my hypnosis services at a drug/alcohol rehab center. This helped me take my mind off what I perceived to be problems and put me back in the modality of helping other people. Increasing what we gave to our church reminded us that God is the Source for all we have, not a person or a paycheck or a stipend.

The results? Soon my husband started getting lots of overtime at his job and I attracted more clients and students. Even better, we both felt at peace and secure with our financial situation even before the increases began.

This past June I received another huge, unexpected financial life challenge: the stipend I received for being a board member and Bishop of my church was taken away and I was only offered 20% of any hypnosis work I did. After meditating for a week I decided it was best for me to resign. This situation came out of the blue and was nothing I had planned for or anticipated. I had been with this organization for thirty years. After feeling frozen in fear with my personality doing another freak dance my husband and I looked at each other and said ‘time to start giving even more’. And yes, we did. And yes, life is plentiful and we are prospering. I give thanks and bless this ever abundant bountiful Universe in which we live!

Hypnosis and Giving: Your subconscious mind is already programmed for succes or failure and everything you are doing in your life is being dictated by that programming. Are you having financial challenges? Do you find yourself thinking in terms of ‘I don’t have, I can’t afford, I am scared of being poor?’ You are operating on the program imprinted in your subconscious mind while also energizing and setting yourself up to experience that which you don’t want to experience! Tell yourself you don’t have enough money and you’ve just created a vibration to repel money away from you.

The steps to bring you out of this mindset is to start giving, yet everything in your subconscious is screaming ‘No! Hold on to it! I can’t afford to give!’ The truth is, you can’t afford not to give.

In the book Prosperity, Charles Fillmore writes: “You may allow avariciousness and stinginess to develop in your mind domain until the very blood (representing soul awareness) in your body starts to dry up and your nerves are shaken and palsied with the fear of future poverty. If so, it is time these ideas were driven out and a new set of ideas settled in your domain to become active in building up a new state of consciousness.”

The beliefs you have are imbedded in your subconscious mind. Thinking new thoughts will help override those beliefs but hypnosis is the fastest, most effective way to actually remove them completely. Removing them is akin to a farmer preparing his field each spring before planting new crops. He tills the soil to remove the rocks and stones so the seeds have room to take root, grow and flourish. Likewise, as you release the old beliefs of lack, limitation, greed and avarice and plant new thought ideas of yearning to give and be more open, you will soon be enjoying the fruits of your labor. Open your heart and mind to give and the universe will teach you how to receive!

I would encourage anyone who yearns to create positive change in their life to explore hypnosis. I encourage everyone reading this post to find an outlet and start giving today!

All healing is awakening and remembering who we are – spirit. We are not just the physical body, but spirit; the living consciousness that gives the body its life and animation. Why don’t we already know this? Why do we have to be reminded? We are born into a state of forgetfulness. We are asleep to our spiritual identity.

Let me give you an example to better explain this concept. When an actor goes to Hollywood to be in a movie, they are given a script about the character they will portray. The character has a certain type of personality and the movie has a storyboard about the character’s life. When an actor really gets involved in their role and believes they are that person for the duration of the filming, they usually win the Oscar. We all believed they were the character as well; we temporarily forgot we were watching an actor playing a part.

When you were born you were given a role to play. The character’s name was whatever mom and dad named you. The storyboard you were given about this character is the life you grew up in: Your name is John. You are Catholic. You will grow up to be a doctor, marry and have three kids, etc. See the correlation? All the information about your life “storyboard” went into your subconscious mind, the storehouse of memory of all the things you’ve ever done in your life.

This became the foundation of who and what you believe you are. When you became an adult and attempted to create a change or do something that went against the information, is when you experienced effort, guilt, failure etc. These issues of guilt, effort or failure can also manifest as a physical problem in your body.

Maybe you’re overweight, or have chronic pain or suffer from insomnia, to give just a few examples. All healing is awakening to who you are, and when you tap into your true power within is when you can effectively create positive, permanent change in your life. This is where utilizing hypnosis to experience the connection of your body, mind and spirit comes into play.

Through hypnosis you are able to alter your consciousness and can then change your perspective to create a positive change in your life. When properly guided with a facilitator, you can rise above the belief that says you’re just a body, and get in touch with who you are as spirit. This is when you can really learn how to use your mind to keep yourself well. You realize you have power to choose the type of thinking you want to entertain which brings forth health and well being, financially, mentally, spiritually and physically. It’s putting the Law of Attraction into your life in a positive, conscious modality. When you are aligned in body, mind and spirit you become empowered to be the architecture of your life dreams.

Meditation and hypnosis are often seen as one and the same. The truth is, they are not. Let me explain why.
Meditation is an emptying out process. It’s a time to quiet the mind and still the thoughts that run through your head all day long. To properly meditate, you need to stop thinking. However, this isn’t as easy as that may sound.

When I first started meditating, my mind was going something like this: “Okay, I’m going to sit here for thirty minutes and not think. Okay, now I’m thinking about how I’m not suppose to be thinking. Right, now I’m thinking about what to eat for dinner and that cute little dress I saw in the store window the other day.”

Sound familiar? Once we’re caught up in the thought stream of the world, it’s hard to unhook. The thought stream is from the analytical part of our mind, the conscious mind. We can stay caught-up in thoughts for a very long time. Often, those thoughts are not even our own!
Why meditate? Science has proven that meditation helps lower blood pressure, release stress and gives you an overall feeling of peace and well-being. Even with the high stress and tension people experience in their fast paced daily lives, meditation helps to slow things down and puts life in a different perspective. The problems are still there, but now there is a different way to handle the situations.

Spiritually, we meditate to re-connect ourselves to our Source. Whatever name label you have for “God”, meditation is a time of quiet inner-reflection, to become united with the God of your heart. Prayer is when you talk to God, meditation is when you get quiet and allow God to talk to you. It’s difficult to hear with all that babble going on!

If meditation is an emptying out process, what are we releasing? The thoughts that have you believing there is something wrong with you. The thinking you entertain that says you are not already connected with God, or that you have to be good and perfect to be accepted by your Creator. In short – the hypnotic state you’ve been in that has you believing you are not okay, just the way you are.

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind we go into everyday. Getting caught up in a good book or movie, studying for an exam and losing track of time are simple examples of being in hypnosis. To go into hypnosis and enter into the subconscious mind, you must by-pass the critical factor of the conscious mind – the thought stream!

This can be done quickly, easily and effectively. One does not need to be relaxed to go into trance, relaxation is a by-product of having been in hypnosis. Why? Because you have relaxed the body and mind together, which allows the nervous system to flush out all the pent-up stress and tensions. This is why one hour of hypnosis is equal to eight hours of sleep; the mind is guided into slowing down the brainwaves, simply by following the instructions given by the facilitator. When the mind relaxes, it is able to let go.

Why isn’t hypnosis the same as meditation? When you are being guided through a creative visualization session by someone, it may be called meditation, but you are establishing selective thinking based upon what the person is saying. Spiritually, we are in hypnosis all the time. People are “asleep” to who they are as a spirit, living in a body. They are in a trance state of believing to be the body/personality, with all the issues and problems causing the stress and tensions.

Hypnosis is a wonderful, powerful tool to locate the reasons as to why you are stuck believing certain things, such as those mentioned above. Once you find the source of the problem, you can let it go! Once you let it go, your mind has been emptied out from that quality of thinking.

This is why hypnosis is a great way to enhance meditation. You can use the scientific approach of hypnosis to enter into your subconscious mind. Once in trance, you can release the old thinking patterns. Once you’ve done that and your mind is clear, you can move into a quiet state of meditation. You’ve reconnected with yourself as spirit. I see this in people all the time; they’ve been guided through a trance/hypnosis session and when it’s over, they are incredibly quiet – no thoughts, just peace and quiet.

That’s the meditative state. The door to get there? Hypnosis. It’s the fastest way to hop out of the thought stream. But hypnosis will not take you through that door. Hypnosis will show you why things are the way they are, and how things can be if you choose to alter your thinking. Once you’ve done that, now meditate. This is the only way to awaken to your higher good, and all healing is awakening to who we are, isn’t it? Yes it is!

I remember being told as a child to count my blessings, but the suggestion always had a negative attachment to it; “There are starving people in Africa, you’d better count your blessings you have food to eat every day…you better count your blessings I didn’t ground you for a week after what you just did.” This one always got me; “Your father will be home from work soon and you’d better count your blessings that he’ll be in a good mood.” So for me, counting my blessings was nothing more than pleading to God that some horrific catastrophe wouldn’t strike our lives! This is NOT what this blog post is about.

There is indeed a very positive and very powerful phenomenon that happens when you start to count your blessings; you begin to feel better about yourself and your life – really! To bless means to energize. When you count your blessings you are focusing your mind on all the positive aspects you have in the moment and energizing them, rather than energize all the negative stuff going wrong. Whatever type of thought you think releases a specific physiological response throughout your body.

People who suffer from depression are known to lack a “normal” amount of serotonin in their brain. This is the “feel good” chemical naturally produced in the body. When you think positive thoughts, which is what you are doing when you are putting your attention on all the good things you have going for you, your brain is releasing the corresponding chemical resulting in the overall feeling of peace and well being.

Go ahead and try this right now. Think about something that makes you mad or unhappy and frown while doing so. Notice what you feel. Now think about something that makes you happy and smile at the same time. Notice the difference?

But Debi, I just don’t have anything in my life to bless. Oh really? You’re reading this article right now. Bless your healthy eyes! Bless your ability to know how to read! Start by blessing your physical body and work your way out from there. Do you have a roof over your head? Food to eat? Maybe it’s not the home of your dreams right now, but it’s a start.

I also know it’s easy to say think positive thoughts when the pattern has been to allow the negative self-talk to take dominion over our minds. And, faced with monthly bills, health issues or a broken relationship it can be difficult to consistently find something for which you are thankful. This is where utilizing hypnosis plays a powerful role in creating a healthy new mind-set filled with positive thoughts every day!

All habits, including the habit of negative or positive thinking, is created in the subconscious mind. Think of an old fashioned record where the needle goes around and around in a groove. This is like the pattern of thoughts we entertain. If you have a long running habit of negative self-talk, then attempt to think one positive thought, the needle will bounce right back into the groove which has been energized over and over again. However, you can go into your subconscious mind and from that state, think positive thoughts, and they will be accepted! You will soon create a new habit of healthy thinking.

Still have doubt? This is an exercise I love to do with my clients. Your subconscious mind has all the memory of every experience you’ve ever had, good or bad. Within these experience memories are the emotional feelings attached to the situation. When my client is in trance I have their subconscious mind bring them back to a happy day in their childhood. It is as if they are right there, re-experiencing the day all over again. The feeling of childlike, carefree happiness is very strong. Now we can take that feeling and bring it into the present moment, while they are focusing on the positive aspects of their life. The results are powerful; they are focusing on the present, while feeling a real emotion of happiness. They have created a new imprint which helps them become successful in counting their blessing and thinking positive, prosperous thoughts every day.

Begin right now. Take a moment and start counting your blessings for everything positive in your life. Do this every day and in a very short amount of time, you will notice a vast difference in how you feel about yourself and the world around you. The right use of your mind is the key to healthy, happy, prosperous, successful living.

This June marked eleven years since my mom passed away from emphysema due to complications from smoking. June of 2000 is when my passion to help people quit smoking was born. Mom had been a life long smoker, never able to kick the habit. Since that time I have worked with thousands of people to help set them free from smoking.

Smoking is the most addictive and hardest to quit substance there is on the planet today, more so than crack, meth or heroin. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 different chemicals.

Smoking is the most accepted habit/dependency substance there is in today’s modern societies and cultures. Think about it. It is illegal to smoke crack while you’re walking down the street, or after a nice meal in a restaurant. You can’t shoot up heroin outside your office on a coffee break. But, it’s perfectly acceptable to light-up every time you get into the car, take a coffee break, finish a meal, have sex, argue, gamble, watch TV, read a book, fold the laundry, and the list goes on and on. This is why many smokers unconsciously smoke; they don’t even realize they’re lighting-up because the habit has been so engrained into their subconscious mind. At the end of one year, a smoker has reinforced this habit approximately 100,000 times!

For most people, quitting cold turkey doesn’t work. The smoker is dealing with a multi-layered dependency. There’s the chemical dependency to the nicotine and additives, there’s the physical habit of bringing the hand to mouth and inhaling over and over again, and there is the emotional attachments to smoking, both positive and negative. Trying to quit cold turkey is like trying to hold a 500 lb. weight in your hand for an hour; your muscles will get tired and you’ll drop the weight. Trying not to light that cigarette is the same as the 500 lb. weight; your new ‘non-smoking’ muscles are not as developed as the habit of smoking, so after a short period of time, it gets too hard not to smoke – and you revert back to the old habit.

There is a much higher success rate for people who use hypnosis to quit smoking. When in hypnosis, the individual is in their subconscious mind. This is where all habits and patterns are created and stored. A scientific fact of hypnosis is, every time an idea is accepted into the subconscious mind, it has to come true. This is why hypnosis is so powerful to kick butt! Using hypnosis, an individual can actually release the ‘smoking program’ from their subconscious mind, and create new imprints as a successful, healthy non-smoker.

From trance, they are readily accepting all the positive suggestions for change they yearn to have in their life. And, with hypnosis, there is a marked decrease in withdrawal symptoms, or switching one bad habit for another. Also, people who are on the road to sobriety have a 5% more chance of going back to drinking or using if they smoke.

If you are a smoker and reading this realize, that to be a non-smoker you need a plan. To be a non-smoker you need to choose a quit date. I encourage you to find a Certified Hypnotist in your area and make an appointment for smoking cessation. Give yourself permission to be a successful non-smoker with hypnosis!

If you want to find a qualified hypnotist in your area I encourage you to go the National Guild Of Hypnotists website.
